19.350
seconds. We'd run faster than this in practice, but not much.
Our competition is fast today!

We started in
6th place, on the outside of row 3. Something was messed up with
the starting grid because with a 70% inversion, we shouldn't have had any
faster cars ahead of us. But the #42 of Hugh Williamson and the #H20
of Darrell Buckingham started ahead of us!?! At the start we tried
going 3 wide through corners 1-2, but didn't make much progress. By
lap 5 the procession of #42..#H20...#3 had moved to the front and the rest
of the 15 lap race was without change. We tried passing #H20 on the
inside on the restart at lap 8, but didn't beat him to corner 1. Our
pack of 3 cars had a significant lead on the rest of the field. We
finished 3rd, with a fastest lap of 19.080 seconds (personal best
time!).

Déjà vu! We started 3rd, inside row 2, with the #42
and #H20 in the preferred positions on the front row. Almost
immediately we were in a 1-2-3 procession again as #42...#H20...#3.
It was a tight but uneventful 3-car race with no mistakes, so no serious
passing attempts. We finished 3rd again (fastest lap of
19.171 seconds).

The #3 Pepsi /
Mac's Motorsports racecar started on outside pole, in 2nd place.
The #4 of Larry Carlson was on the pole. At the start we couldn't
make it stick on the outside, so we fell in behind #4. On lap 2 we
got inside him in corner 1 and made the pass for 1st place.
For the next 13 laps we ran consistent fast laps in the 19.20s and 19.30s,
holding off #22 Rick Walls. But on lap 15, as we were catching lap
traffic, two of the last cars rubbed and slid through the infield at
corner 1, spraying the track with water and dirt. Brent was cautious
entering the corner as these cars were spinning around - he got out of the
throttle and moved up the track. Big mistake. #22 stayed in
the throttle and moved under us through corner 2. Shouldn't be a big
deal because when the yellow flag is thrown, we'll restart based on the
last lap, right? Wrong. There was no yellow, so we fell back
to 2nd place. Corner 1 was slippery for the next lap or two.
Then we fell back to 4th when #45 and #454 got a better line
through lap traffic. :-(
After a few attempts Brent was
able to get inside #454 in corner 1 and by corner 3 we moved up to 3rd.
The leaders tangled a few laps later in a lap traffic incident in corner
2, causing #22 to lose 3 positions, so new we're back up to 2nd,
behind #45, and still negotiating lap traffic. We stayed close up to
#45, but didn't have any serious passing opportunities through to the end
of the race. We finished 2nd! Our fastest lap was
19.245 seconds.
