We were pleased with this - faster than
any of our practice laps.

Heat Race 1 - 5th
(20 laps, shortened to 15
laps because of cautions)

The #3 Pepsi / Mac's Motorsports racecar started the
first race of the year in 9th position, on the outside of row 4,
the result of a 70% inversion of qualifying times. There was no place to
go in the first couple of laps - we mostly followed #17 Ira Laughy. On
lap 3 we got showered with boulders in corner 1-2 as #67 went off-track.
As he came back on, he drove hard into the front of #17 who spun out
trying to avoid the mess. Good thing we'd moved to the outside groove!
We restarted in 8th, but #45 Dave Kindopp got by a few of us on the
outside a couple of laps later so we fell to 9th. Over the next 6
or 7 laps we passed numerous cars on the inside at various places on the
track. By lap 10 we were 5th, but about 1/8 lap back from #18. We
caught him on the last lap, but time had run out. We finished 5th.
Fastest lap - 19.573 seconds.

We started 2nd,
on the outside of row 1. By corner 3 we'd passed pole sitter #45 Dave
Kindopp on the outside to take 1st.
The race was uneventful. Most of our lap times were in the 19.30s and
19.40s. #22 Rick Walls followed us for most of the race, but didn't find
any passing opportunities. We finished 1st !!!
Fastest lap - 19.311 seconds.

We started 3rd,
inside row 2. #22 was in front of us in pole position, #454 Randy
Thompson started on outside pole. #22 Rick Walls started to pull away and
#454 moved in behind him, so we followed in 3rd
place. #42 Hugh Williamson tried hard to get around us for 10 laps or so,
then he fell back, replaced for awhile by #45. We were glued to #454's
bumper much of the time, but had few good passing chances. #454 fought
hard with #22 throughout the race - we were hoping to capitalize on a
mistake in their battle, but it didn't happen.
We finished 3rd! Fastest lap - 19.286 seconds.
